Human-on-the-loop

Human-on-the-loop is a supervision model where AI acts on its own while a person monitors the results and can intervene. The human watches the loop rather than sitting inside it.

Where human-in-the-loop requires approval before each action, human-on-the-loop moves the person to a monitoring position: the system executes continuously, and the human watches dashboards, samples outputs, and steps in when something drifts. It is the air-traffic-control posture instead of the co-signer posture.

The model fits high-volume, lower-stakes work where per-action review would be impractical: categorizing hundreds of support tickets, routing leads, tagging transactions. If two percent are miscategorized, the cost is small and correctable, and a weekly sample catches systematic drift.

The danger is using on-the-loop supervision for in-the-loop stakes. Monitoring is retrospective by nature; by the time a dashboard shows a problem with outbound invoices, the invoices are already in customers' inboxes. A useful rule for small businesses: on-the-loop for what stays inside the building, in-the-loop for what leaves it. The sorting exercise is worth doing explicitly, task by task, before buying tools rather than after.
